Confirmation
What is Confirmation?
If you were baptised as a baby or young child, your parents and godparents made promises on your behalf. Through a service of Confirmation, a person who has already been baptised confirms these promises, which were made on their behalf during baptism. Confirmation is therefore part of a person's journey of faith.
How often do Confirmation services take place?
Confirmation services generally only take place once a year. The service will not always be held in one of our churches - you may be Confirmed in another church within the deanery (the local area), or at Birmingham Cathedral. Wherever the service takes place, it will be attended by the local Bishop, who will lay his hands on your head and pray for God's Holy Spirit to be with you for the rest of your life.
How old do I have to be?
In our churches, Confirmation is generally open to children in school year 6 and above. However, it is important that the person coming for Confirmation, whatever their age, feels that it is the right thing for them.
Do I have to attend a Confirmation group before I can be Confirmed?
Yes. Normally we would run separate groups for adults and youth. This is a good opportunity to ask questions that you may have about your faith.
We would also have a rehearsal before the Confirmation service, to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
Confirmation groups will always be advertised via our weekly bulletin.
What happens after I have been Confirmed?
After you have been Confirmed, who will be able to receive the bread and wine during our Eucharistic services.
What do I do next?
If you still have questions about Confirmation, the Church of England website has lots of information which is easily accessible. Or, if you are interested in being Confirmed, you can chat to a member of our clergy team in church.
